The Southern Nevada Home Builder Association presented the Silver Nugget Awards on March 29th at the Renaissance Hotel in Las Vegas. The association’s members were due a big party, since the last one was a decade ago. In that time the industry has seen the market skyrocket to uncharted highs and plunge to great lows.
Las Vegas new home community construction is softening, but don’t get too excited because that doesn’t mean buyers are scoring big discounts yet. According to mortgage-finance company Freddie Mac, the slowdown comes amid rising borrowing costs for would-be buyers. Interest rates for a 30-year mortgage averaged 4.32% this past week, up from 3.54% a year earlier. Las Vegas-based Home Builders Research reported new home builders here sold 433 new homes last month, down 15% from a year earlier, according to a new report from Home Builders Research. They also pulled 386 permits in February, down 22% from a year ago.

This is welcome news for the Las Vegas economy and will provide many new construction and supporting jobs. DR Horton paid $14.25 million, about $374,000 an acre.
